Polermedel, or polishing compound, is a substance used to smooth, shine, and finish surfaces through controlled abrasion and, in some formulations, chemical action. They are employed across metalworking, automotive refinishing, jewelry making, woodworking, and various crafts to reduce surface roughness, remove tarnish or oxidation, and eliminate minor scratches.

Types and formulations include abrasive and non-abrasive varieties. Abrasive polermedel contain fine abrasive particles suspended in a binder or paste, with common materials such as aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, cerium oxide, rouge (iron oxide), and, for very fine work, diamond pastes. The abrasive grit ranges from coarse to ultra-fine, corresponding to the amount of material removed and the desired finish quality. Non-abrasive polermedel rely more on chemical action and gloss enhancement, sometimes incorporating waxes or oils to protect and brighten surfaces after polishing.

Applications span metals (stainless steel, brass, silver, copper), automotive paints, glass, plastics, ceramics, and wood. In jewelry and optics, specialized pastes achieve high luster and clarity. For automotive work, polishing compounds are used with machines or cloths to remove swirl marks and oxidation, often followed by waxing or sealants for protection.

Safety and handling considerations include avoiding inhalation of dust, wearing eye protection, and following product-specific instructions. Some formulas contain volatile solvents or chemicals; ensure adequate ventilation and proper storage. Waste should be disposed of in accordance with local regulations.
