Polarbanor is a hypothetical mineral described in contemporary cryogeology and planetary science as a rare phase forming in subzero environments of polar regions. The term combines 'polar' with a suffix common to mineral names and is used in both terrestrial permafrost studies and climate-related simulations.

First described in a 2047 field study by the Polar Institute of Geoscience after targeted analyses of permafrost cores in the Arctic, polarized light microscopy revealed distinctive crystal habits not matched by known minerals. Subsequent expeditions identified polarbanor-like signatures in deep Antarctic ice and in subglacial rock exposures, suggesting a broader but still limited distribution.

Chemical and structural analyses characterize polarbanor as a hydrated silicate mineral with trace metals. It forms as microcrystalline aggregates featuring a layered sheet-like topology and exhibits low-temperature crystallization behavior distinct from most weathering products.

Physical properties are reported as lightweight crystals with a pale, opalescent appearance, Mohs hardness around 3–4, and a relatively low density. Optical properties include moderate refractive index and notable birefringence under cross-polarized light.

Formation is linked to periglacial processes, involving interaction of mineral-rich meltwaters with organic-bearing sediments under subfreezing conditions. Its stability is sensitive to temperature and moisture fluctuations, making polarbanor a potential paleoclimate proxy.

Research relevance centers on cryostatic metamorphism, subglacial hydrology, and climate reconstruction. While not yet considered industrially important, polarbanor provides insight into mineral-forming pathways under extreme cold and informs models of polar environmental change.
