Polümeriseerimiseks, often translated as polymerization, is a chemical process where relatively small molecules, called monomers, combine chemically to produce a very large chain-like or network molecule, called a polymer. This process is fundamental to the creation of plastics, synthetic fibers, and many other materials essential to modern life.

There are several types of polymerization reactions. Addition polymerization involves monomers adding to one another in such a way that the polymer contains all the atoms of the monomer. Chain-growth polymerization is a common type of addition polymerization where a reactive site, such as a free radical, ion, or carbanion, propagates along a chain of monomers. Condensation polymerization, on the other hand, involves monomers reacting with each other to form a polymer, with the loss of a small molecule such as water or methanol for each linkage formed.

The conditions under which polymerization occurs, such as temperature, pressure, and the presence of catalysts or initiators, significantly influence the properties of the resulting polymer. The molecular weight, branching, and stereochemistry of the polymer are all determined by the polymerization mechanism and reaction conditions. Understanding and controlling these factors allows chemists and engineers to tailor polymers for specific applications, ranging from flexible films and durable fibers to rigid structural components.
