Podstativní is a term used in some Czech linguistic grammars to describe words or constructions that behave like nouns. The core idea is that podstativní elements have nominal meaning or function, even if their origin or form is not that of a traditional noun. The term is closely related to the concept of nominalization, and it is often contrasted with verbal or adjectival forms within syntactic descriptions.

In practice, podstativní forms include nominalized verbs and other word-forms that function as nouns in a sentence. Examples are nominalizations such as přemýšlení (from the verb přemýšlet, “to think”) or činnost (activity) that can serve as subjects or objects. In some grammars, these forms are discussed as a separate layer of the lexicon or morphology, helping to explain how actions, processes, or relations can be treated as entities in discourse.

The term reflects a broader descriptive goal: to capture how language turns processes or qualities into stand-alone units that can participate in argument structure, quantification, or predication in ways similar to traditional nouns.
