Pleurerite, also known as pleurite, is a rare medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the pleura, the two layers of tissue surrounding the lungs and lining the chest cavity. The pleura can become irritated and inflamed due to various factors, such as infection, injury, or disease.

The symptoms of pleurerite include chest pain, often severe and sharp, which can worsen when inhaling deeply or coughing. Shortness of breath, fatigue, and fever may also occur. In some cases, the pleura may leak fluid into the chest, causing accumulation of fluid, known as pleural effusion.

The causes of pleurerite can be varied, including infections such as pneumonia or tuberculosis, autoimmune disorders like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, and lung diseases including cancer and asbestosis. Fractures or injuries to the chest can also lead to pleurerite. Diagnosis often involves a combination of chest X-ray, computerized tomography (CT) scan, and analysis of pleural fluid for bacteria or abnormal cells.

Treatment of pleurerite depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. Antibiotics may be prescribed to treat bacterial infections, while medications such as corticosteroids can help reduce inflammation. In cases of significant pleural effusion, drainage of the fluid by inserting a chest tube may be necessary. In severe cases, hospitalization and respiratory support may be required. In some cases, the condition may resolve on its own with rest and symptom management.
