Plazmaszinterelés, often translated as plasma sintering, is a solid-state sintering process that utilizes a low-temperature plasma to achieve the densification of powder compacts. Unlike conventional sintering methods that rely on high furnace temperatures, plasma sintering employs a glow discharge plasma, typically a low-pressure argon or a mixture of gases, to heat the powder particles. The plasma interacts with the surface of the powder particles, transferring energy through ion bombardment and electron heating, which leads to localized melting and diffusion at the particle interfaces. This localized heating minimizes the overall thermal energy input required, allowing for sintering at significantly lower bulk temperatures.

The process is often carried out in a vacuum or controlled atmosphere to prevent oxidation of the powder material. The plasma generation is typically achieved through radio frequency (RF) or direct current (DC) power sources. The key advantage of plasma sintering lies in its ability to densify materials that are difficult to sinter by conventional methods, such as ceramics with high melting points or materials prone to grain growth at high temperatures.
