These materials are derived primarily from petrochemicals, such as crude oil and natural gas, though some biodegradable plastics are produced from renewable resources like corn or sugarcane. Plastics are valued for their versatility, durability, lightweight properties, and resistance to moisture, chemicals, and corrosion, making them essential in numerous industries.

The production of plastics began in the early 20th century, with the first commercially successful plastic, Bakelite, introduced in 1907. Since then, advancements in polymer chemistry have led to the development of thousands of plastic types, each tailored for specific applications. Common categories include thermoplastics (which soften when heated and harden when cooled), thermosetting plastics (which harden permanently upon curing), and elastomers (which exhibit elastic properties).

Plastics are widely used in packaging, construction, automotive parts, medical devices, electronics, and consumer goods. Their low cost and ease of manufacturing contribute to their dominance in modern production. However, the environmental impact of plastics has become a significant concern. While they are durable and resistant to degradation, most conventional plastics do not biodegrade easily, leading to pollution and harm to ecosystems.
