Plastgjutning, often translated as plastic molding or plastic casting, refers to a broad category of manufacturing processes used to produce plastic parts by shaping molten plastic into a desired form. The specific method employed depends on factors like the type of plastic, the complexity of the part, the required production volume, and cost considerations.

One of the most common types is injection molding. In this process, plastic pellets are heated and melted, then injected under high pressure into a mold cavity. The plastic cools and solidifies within the mold, which is then opened to eject the finished part. Injection molding is widely used for mass production of intricate and precise plastic components.

Another significant method is blow molding, primarily used for creating hollow plastic objects like bottles and containers. It involves heating a plastic tube (parison) and then inflating it with air inside a mold, forcing the plastic to take the shape of the mold cavity. Rotational molding, also known as rotomolding, is suitable for large, hollow parts and involves heating plastic powder within a rotating mold.

Other plastic molding techniques include compression molding, where a pre-measured amount of plastic is placed into a heated mold and then compressed; and extrusion, which continuously forces molten plastic through a die to create a profile with a constant cross-section, often used for pipes, films, and rods. The choice of plastgjutning method is crucial for achieving the desired product characteristics and efficient manufacturing.
