Plastformar are precision tools used to shape plastic materials into finished parts. They are designed for molding processes such as injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming, and extrusion. Most plastformar are made from tool steel or aluminum; inserts may use copper alloys for heating or cooling or wear resistance.

Injection molds consist of two or more movable halves that close around molten plastic. Designs may include hot-runner systems, ejector pins, cooling channels, and venting. Blow molds are used for hollow parts and feature split molds for forming and neck finishes. Thermoforming uses male and female forming dies to shape preheated sheets. Extrusion dies define the cross-section of continuous profiles.

Manufacture and maintenance: Mold design uses CAD/CAM software, followed by CNC milling, wire EDM, and precision grinding. Surfaces are finished and polished to reduce cycle times and improve part quality. Tolerances vary by process; quality control relies on metrology, leak testing, and functional tests. Regular maintenance includes cleaning, lubrication, and replacement of worn components.

Applications and sustainability: Plastformar are central to automotive, packaging, electronics, medical devices, and consumer goods industries. They are designed for long service life but can be refurbished to extend use. At end of life, attention is given to recycling plastic residues and to reconditioning molds where feasible.
