A plasmathruster is a type of electric propulsion system used for spacecraft. It generates thrust by accelerating a plasma, which is an ionized gas composed of ions and electrons. Unlike chemical rockets that rely on combustion, plasmathrusters use electrical energy to heat and expel a propellant. This propellant is typically a gas such as xenon, argon, or krypton.

The fundamental principle involves ionizing the propellant gas and then using electromagnetic fields to accelerate the resulting plasma to high velocities. This process creates a directed exhaust stream that generates thrust according to Newton's third law of motion. Different types of plasmathrusters exist, including Hall thrusters, ion thrusters, and pulsed plasma thrusters, each employing unique methods for plasma generation and acceleration.

Plasmathrusters offer significant advantages over chemical rockets, primarily their high specific impulse. Specific impulse is a measure of propellant efficiency, indicating how much thrust is produced per unit of propellant consumed over time. High specific impulse means plasmathrusters can achieve much greater velocity changes with the same amount of propellant, making them ideal for long-duration missions, deep space exploration, and orbital maneuvering where fuel mass is a critical constraint.

However, plasmathrusters also have limitations. Their thrust levels are generally much lower than those of chemical rockets, meaning they accelerate spacecraft more slowly. This makes them less suitable for rapid maneuvers or escaping strong gravitational fields. Additionally, they require a substantial electrical power source, which can add complexity and mass to a spacecraft. Despite these drawbacks, plasmathrusters represent a vital technology for modern space propulsion.
