A plasmaskjerm, or plasma display panel (PDP), is a type of flat panel display technology used for large televisions and other larger display applications. It works by exciting small cells containing ionized gas, or plasma, to produce light.

Each pixel on a plasma screen is made up of a small number of cells, typically three in a color display, corresponding to red, green, and blue. Within each cell, a mixture of noble gases, usually neon and xenon, is present. When an electrical voltage is applied to electrodes associated with the cell, the gas becomes ionized and forms a plasma. This plasma then emits ultraviolet (UV) light.

The UV light then strikes a phosphorescent coating within the cell. This coating absorbs the UV light and re-emits it as visible light of a specific color. By controlling the voltage applied to the cells, the intensity of the light produced can be adjusted, allowing for the creation of different shades and colors. The image is formed by activating and deactivating these tiny cells in a precise pattern.

Plasma displays are known for their excellent black levels, wide viewing angles, and fast response times, making them well-suited for displaying fast-moving content like sports and action movies. However, they also tend to consume more power than other display technologies and can be susceptible to image retention or "burn-in" if static images are displayed for extended periods. While once a popular choice for large screen TVs, plasma technology has largely been superseded by LED-backlit LCD and OLED technologies in the consumer market.
