Plasmahitsausmenetelmät refer to a group of welding processes that utilize a plasma arc to join materials. In plasma welding, a constricted arc is generated between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the workpiece, or between the electrode and a constricting nozzle. This constriction focuses the plasma jet, creating a highly concentrated heat source that can achieve higher energy densities compared to conventional TIG welding.

There are several variations of plasma welding, broadly categorized into non-transferred and transferred arc modes. In the non-transferred arc mode, the plasma arc is contained within the torch, and the heat is transferred to the workpiece. This mode is suitable for applications where melting of the electrode is undesirable, such as welding thin materials or in situations where contamination must be avoided. The transferred arc mode, on the other hand, establishes an arc between the electrode and the workpiece, allowing for deeper penetration and higher welding speeds. This is the more common mode for joining thicker materials.

Plasma welding offers several advantages, including precise control over the heat input, which leads to less distortion and a narrower heat-affected zone. The high energy density of the plasma arc allows for faster welding speeds and the ability to weld a wide range of materials, including stainless steels, aluminum alloys, and titanium. The process can also be automated, making it suitable for high-volume production. However, the initial equipment cost can be higher compared to other welding methods, and proper training is required for operators to achieve optimal results. Plasma welding is often used in industries where high-quality welds and precision are critical, such as aerospace, automotive, and medical device manufacturing.
