Planthumans are a hypothetical or speculative category of humans with plant-like traits that arise through genetic modification, endosymbiosis with photosynthetic organisms, or adaptive evolution. The term blends plant biology and human biology, and is used mainly in speculative biology, science fiction, and discussions of future bioengineering.

The defining feature is some plant-like trait beyond ordinary humans: photosynthetic capability; chlorophyll-rich tissues; vascular-like tissue; foliate patterns; ability to respond to light. In theory, planthumans might rely on photosynthesis to supplement calories, reducing food intake, but would require adaptation to light environments and water balance. They would still need nutrients, and sun exposure would be a constraint.

Variants range from partial integrations, such as localized chloroplasts in skin or hair, to more extensive modifications enabling leaf-like appendages or sap-like fluid transport. Reproduction and development would be unaffected in principle but could entail ecological and metabolic trade-offs.

The concept raises questions about identity, rights, and ecological impact, including biosafety in genetic modification and effects on agriculture and ecosystems.

Planthumans appear in speculative fiction, video games and art as a design motif for hybrid human-plant life, exploring themes of coexistence with ecosystems and new modes of perception or energy use.
