Planarianlar, commonly called planarians, are free-living flatworms in the phylum Platyhelminthes and the order Tricladida. They inhabit freshwater, brackish, and damp terrestrial environments, and are particularly abundant in ponds and streams. Several species, such as those in the genera Dugesia and Schmidtea, are widely used in laboratory studies because of their pronounced regenerative abilities. Planarians are often studied as a model for understanding tissue regeneration and stem cell biology.

Anatomy and physiology: Planarians have a dorsoventrally flat body with a ventral mouth that opens into a branched gastrovascular cavity. The nervous system consists of a pair of cerebral ganglia (a simple brain) and two ventral nerve cords connected by transverse nerves. They possess sensory structures such as auricles for chemical sensing and light-sensitive eyespots. Excretion and osmoregulation are handled by protonephridia containing flame cells. The gut branches extensively to distribute nutrients throughout the body, and there is no circulatory system.

Reproduction and development: Planarians are hermaphroditic and can reproduce sexually through cross-fertilization. They also reproduce asexually by transverse fission or budding. Their regenerative capacity is remarkable: most body parts can be regrown after injury. This ability is driven by neoblasts, pluripotent adult stem cells scattered throughout the body, which can differentiate into all necessary cell types.

Research and ecology: Planarians are important model organisms in regeneration and developmental biology. The genome of species such as Schmidtea mediterranea has been sequenced, and these animals are used to study stem cell dynamics, pattern formation, and tissue renewal. Ecologically, planarians act as predators of small invertebrates in freshwater ecosystems, contributing to nutrient cycling and community dynamics.
