Plaadimängija, also known as a turntable or record player, is an electromechanical device used to reproduce sound from a vinyl record. It works by rotating a vinyl disc at a precise speed, typically 33⅓ or 45 revolutions per minute (RPM). A stylus, also called a needle, is placed in the groove of the spinning record. As the stylus moves along the groove, it vibrates in response to the undulations carved into the vinyl. These vibrations are then converted into an electrical signal by a cartridge attached to the stylus. This electrical signal is subsequently amplified and sent to loudspeakers, recreating the original audio.

The main components of a turntable include the platter, which holds the record; the motor, which drives the platter's rotation; the tonearm, which holds the cartridge and stylus; and the cartridge itself. Different types of cartridges exist, with magnetic cartridges being the most common, further divided into moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) designs, each offering distinct sonic characteristics. Turntables can be found in various configurations, from simple, integrated units with built-in preamplifiers and speakers to sophisticated component systems requiring separate preamplifiers, amplifiers, and speakers. The quality of a turntable's playback is influenced by factors such as the turntable's stability, the tonearm's design and balance, the cartridge's quality, and the overall alignment of the system.
