Pixelöitymistä, known in English as pixelization, is the process of transforming continuous visual information into a discrete grid of colored pixels. The technique is ubiquitous in digital imaging, video compression, and graphical user interfaces, where it enables efficient data representation and manipulation. By aggregating neighboring light or color samples into single units, pixelization reduces resolution, which can be applied intentionally for artistic effect, data compression, or to obscure sensitive content.

The basic algorithm samples an image at regular intervals, computes a representative color for each block, and assigns that color to all pixels within the block. The resulting image retains overall shapes and contrasts but lacks fine detail. In video codecs such as JPEG and MPEG, pixelization is combined with block-based transforms and quantization to achieve high compression ratios while preserving perceptual quality.
