The cookies are related to other northern and central European gingerbread varieties such as Finnish piparkakut, Swedish pepparkakor and German Pfefferkuchen.

Typical ingredients include flour, sugar or syrup (honey, molasses or dark syrup), butter or margarine, and a blend of warm spices—most often ginger, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and nutmeg.
