Pintavalunta is a term used in hydrology to describe surface runoff—the portion of precipitation or snowmelt that flows over the land surface rather than infiltrating into the soil. This overland flow is the immediate response of a catchment to rainfall and contributes water to streams, rivers, and drainage networks.

Pintavalunta forms when rainfall intensity exceeds the soil’s infiltration capacity or when the soil is already near saturation. Infiltration capacity depends on soil type, moisture, texture, and compaction, while the land surface characteristics such as vegetation cover, roughness, slope, and surface permeability influence how quickly water can move and concentrate into channels. In urban areas, impervious surfaces like roads and roofs prevent infiltration, leading to pronounced pintavalunta during rain events and often rapid downstream flow through storm sewers.

In hydrological analysis, pintavalunta is distinguished from subsurface flow and baseflow. It can be further categorized as Hortonian overland flow (infiltration-excess) or saturation overland flow (where the soil is already saturated). The magnitude and timing of pintavalunta affect flood risk, erosion, sediment transport, and pollutant delivery to aquatic ecosystems. It is studied through field measurements, runoff plots, and hydrological models that combine rainfall data with land cover, soil properties, and drainage characteristics to estimate overland flow and its impacts.
