Pintaansa is a contemporary art collective established in Helsinki in 2003. The group is dedicated to creating immersive installations that engage viewers with the physical properties of surfaces and spatial perception. Its name derives from the Finnish word “pinta” meaning “surface,” reflecting the collective’s focus on the materiality of everyday environments.

The founding members, designers Ville Nyström, Maarit Kivelä, and architect Jukka Lahtinen, began collaborating while working on a university project exploring digital fabrication techniques. The project’s success led to a formal organization that encourages multidisciplinary collaboration among artists, architects, engineers, and software developers. Pintaansa operates out of a repurposed warehouse in the Kallio district, which serves both as a studio and exhibition space.

Pintaansa’s notable projects include the 2008 installation “Reflections” which used thousands of mirrored panels to alter the perception of architectural space, and the 2015 environmental series “Water Surface” which incorporated hydrogel materials to study the interaction between fluid dynamics and human movement. In 2019, the collective received a grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation for its research into sustainable materials for large-scale art.

The group follows a participatory model, inviting public workshops and collaborative design sessions. Through these initiatives, Pintaansa seeks to bridge the gap between technical research and aesthetic expression. While relatively obscure internationally, it maintains an active online presence and regularly contributes to biennial art exhibitions across Scandinavia. Its work has been reviewed in journals such as the Nordic Journal of Art and Design and featured on the television program Kulturtrakt.

In addition to exhibitions, Pintaansa offers consulting services for public architecture projects, advising on how to incorporate artistic surface treatments into functional design. The collective’s emphasis on experimentation and interdisciplinary dialogue positions it as a notable contributor to contemporary Finnish art and urban design discourse.
