Pikalajittelu, meaning "fast sorting" in Finnish, refers to a sorting algorithm that shares conceptual similarities with quicksort. It is known for its efficiency in practice, often outperforming other sorting algorithms on average for large datasets. The core principle of Pikalajittelu involves partitioning an array into two sub-arrays around a chosen pivot element. Elements smaller than the pivot are placed in the left sub-array, and elements larger than the pivot are placed in the right sub-array. This partitioning process is recursively applied to the sub-arrays until the entire array is sorted.

The performance of Pikalajittelu is highly dependent on the choice of pivot. A good pivot selection strategy leads to balanced partitions and near-optimal performance, achieving an average time complexity of O(n log n). However, a poor pivot choice, such as consistently selecting the smallest or largest element, can result in unbalanced partitions and degrade performance to O(n^2) in the worst case. Various techniques exist to mitigate the risk of worst-case scenarios, including random pivot selection or using the median-of-three method.

While quicksort is widely recognized and studied, Pikalajittelu represents a practical implementation and perhaps a less formally documented variant. Its effectiveness stems from its in-place sorting capability, meaning it requires minimal additional memory, and its generally fast execution speed.
