Origin and usage: The term appears in online discussions and experimental projects from the late 2000s onward, particularly among researchers and artists exploring circular data visualization and nonstandard encodings. It is not a formal standard and is rarely found in peer‑reviewed literature.

Mechanics: In a piired layout, data elements occupy successive rings around a center. The angular position of each element can be derived from digits of pi (for example, using the sequence 3,1,4,1,5,9,...) or from a function that incorporates pi, while the radius increases with ring index. The result is a compact, aesthetically circular arrangement with quasi-random density.

Variants and uses: A piired encoding maps symbols to ring–angle coordinates, enabling text or data to be represented in a circular form. Piired tiling adapts pi-derived angular steps to a tiling pattern. Applications include data visualization, cryptographic art, and educational demonstrations of irrational numbers.
