Piikarbidiä, commonly known as silicon carbide (SiC), is a compound of silicon and carbon with the chemical formula SiC. It is a semiconductor material that exhibits remarkable hardness, chemical inertness, and high thermal conductivity. These properties make it suitable for a wide range of applications.

Pure silicon carbide is a colorless, transparent crystalline solid. It is synthesized through a high-temperature process, typically the Acheson process, where silica sand and carbon are heated in an electric resistance furnace. Different crystalline forms, known as polytypes, exist, each with slightly varying properties. The most common polytypes are 3C-SiC, 4H-SiC, and 6H-SiC.

Due to its exceptional hardness, second only to diamond, silicon carbide is widely used as an abrasive. It is found in sandpaper, grinding wheels, and cutting tools. Its high strength and thermal stability also make it useful in refractory applications, such as kiln furniture and furnace linings.

In recent years, silicon carbide has gained significant traction in the electronics industry. Its wide bandgap, high breakdown voltage, and low on-resistance allow it to be used in high-power and high-frequency electronic devices. These include power diodes, transistors, and inverters, particularly in electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. Its ability to withstand high temperatures also enables its use in harsh environments.
