Pigmentada is a small municipality located in the department of Antioquia, Colombia. It lies in the eastern foothills of the Andean Range, surrounded by a mixture of cloud forest and agricultural land. The town’s elevation is roughly 1,200 metres above sea level, and it is situated approximately 180 kilometres east of the departmental capital, Medellín, an hour and a half by road. According to the most recent national census, the population of Pigmentada is about 3,000 residents, with a slight increase in the last decade due to rural migration and local development projects.

The economy of Pigmentada is predominantly agrarian, with coffee, maize, and plantain the principal crops cultivated on its terraced farms. There is also a modest livestock sector, particularly cattle and poultry, which supply both local markets and nearby towns. In addition to agriculture, the town’s economy benefits from a small-scale artisanal sector that crafts leather goods and woven textiles using traditional methods.

Historically, Pigmentada was established in the late 18th century as a frontier outpost for Spanish settlers, following the expansion of the colonial dominion into the interior of the Magdalena River basin. Over time it developed into a local administrative center, with a municipal council established in the early 20th century. The town’s cultural life centers around an annual patron saint festival held in October, which includes processions, folk music, and communal cuisine.

Environmental features of the area include a variety of endemic flora and fauna typical of the upper Magdalena Valley, many of which are protected within nearby reserves. Climate-wise, Pigmentada enjoys a mild, wetter season from December to March, and a drier, hotter period from June to September. The municipality is governed by an elected mayor and council, operating under the broader administrative framework of the Antioquia Department.
