Pick and place machines, often referred to as pick and place lines, are automated systems used in manufacturing, particularly in electronics assembly, to place components onto a printed circuit board (PCB). These machines are crucial for high-speed, high-precision placement of a wide variety of electronic parts, from tiny surface-mount devices (SMDs) to larger connectors.

A pick and place line typically consists of several integrated machines working in sequence. The process begins with a PCB conveyor system that transports bare boards to the first station. Here, a dispensing machine, or a solder paste printer, applies solder paste or adhesive to the designated pads on the PCB.

Following the dispensing step, the PCB moves to the pick and place machine itself. This machine utilizes a robotic arm with a vacuum nozzle or gripper to pick up components from feeder trays or reels. The machine's vision system identifies the component and its orientation, ensuring accurate placement on the PCB according to the design data. Once placed, the PCB proceeds to a reflow oven where the solder paste is melted, creating a permanent electrical and mechanical connection between the component and the board.

Modern pick and place lines are highly sophisticated, offering high throughput and accuracy. They are essential for efficient mass production of electronic devices, enabling manufacturers to meet demand for products ranging from smartphones and computers to automotive electronics and medical equipment. The continuous advancement in pick and place technology focuses on increasing speed, improving accuracy for ever-smaller components, and enhancing flexibility to handle a wider range of component types and board sizes.
