Phishing-resistant is a term used to describe authentication methods that are highly effective at preventing phishing attacks. These methods typically rely on cryptographic keys or hardware tokens that are difficult or impossible for attackers to steal or replicate remotely. Unlike password-based authentication, which can be susceptible to social engineering tactics like fake login pages and credential harvesting, phishing-resistant methods offer a more robust security posture.

A primary example of phishing-resistant technology is FIDO (Fast Identity Online) authentication. FIDO uses public-key cryptography to create unique, device-bound credentials for each website or service. When a user logs in, their device uses its private key to sign a challenge from the server, proving their identity without ever transmitting their password or other sensitive information over the network. This process is inherently resistant to phishing because even if a user is tricked into visiting a malicious site, the attacker cannot capture the necessary cryptographic material to authenticate.

Other phishing-resistant methods include hardware security keys, which are physical devices that users must possess and interact with (often by touching a button) to complete an authentication. These keys generate cryptographic signatures that are verified by the service. The physical nature of these keys makes them extremely difficult for remote attackers to compromise. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) in general can improve security, but not all MFA methods are equally phishing-resistant. For instance, SMS-based codes can still be intercepted or tricked out of users. Phishing-resistant authentication prioritizes strong, unforgeable cryptographic proofs of identity.
