philosophist

A philosophist is a person who studies or engages in philosophy. The term derives from the Greek philosophos, meaning lover of wisdom (philo- “loving” + sophos “wisdom”). In modern English, the standard term for someone who studies philosophy is philosopher; philosophist is rare and often considered archaic or literary, appearing mainly in historical texts, translations, or discussions of language. In some contexts philosophist may be used as a synonym for philosopher or to emphasize a practical or everyday pursuit of wisdom, but usage varies and it is not a common professional designation today.
