The name Phialai is traced in-world to the ancient Phian dialect, where phia meant light and lai denoted haven, a combination interpreted by scholars as "haven of light." This etymology appears in guide texts and city legends.

Phialai occupies a crescent bay with a calm, seasonally productive harbor. Its economy combines fishing, salt production, shipbuilding, and trade in textiles, pottery, and spices.
