Sailors used different types of shanties for specific tasks: capstan shanties for turning the capstan, halyard shanties for hoisting sails, and sheet shanties for adjusting lines.

Performance practice: a shantyman leads with a catchy verse or line, the crew joins on a chorus, tempo matched to work pace. The melody is simple, repetitive, and easily learned, aiding coordination and morale. Lyrics often touched on maritime life, humor, danger, or home.

Decline and revival: with steam and mechanization, traditional shanties declined in the early 20th century. In the 20th century scholars and folk music enthusiasts collected and revived them. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, shanties gained renewed popularity through recordings, live performances, and online communities, highlighting their historical value and communal spirit.
