Historically, the term "Petianis" is associated with a group of early Christians who followed the teachings of a figure named Montanus, originating in the 2nd century AD in Phrygia, an ancient region of Anatolia. This movement, often referred to as Montanism, was characterized by its emphasis on prophecy, ecstatic utterances, and a belief in the imminent return of Christ. The Petianis, in this context, were followers who believed Montanus and his female companions, Prisca and Maximilla, were divinely inspired prophets. The mainstream church eventually declared Montanism a heresy, and its followers largely disappeared over time.
