Personalfrihet is a concept used in Nordic and European discourse to denote the protection and guarantee of the individual’s freedom in matters touching the person. It covers civil liberties, personal autonomy, physical and psychological integrity, and privacy against coercive or arbitrary state action. The term reflects the idea that the state bears a duty to respect the sphere of personal life that is essential to human dignity.

In international law, freedom of the person is anchored in the universal rights framework: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person, and the ICCPR similarly protects liberty and security of the person. Domestic constitutions and human rights laws translate these principles into protections against arbitrary detention, cruel treatment, or unwarranted surveillance, and they prescribe due process and informed consent in medical settings.

Policy debates around personalfrihet often center on balancing public safety with individual autonomy. Issues include surveillance and data protection, criminal justice measures, detention and interrogation practices, and medical ethics. Critics warn against overreach that erodes privacy or bodily integrity, while supporters emphasize the need for security and due process.
