peritonealiin

Peritonealiin is a Finnish medical term used to describe actions or therapies delivered into the peritoneal cavity, i.e., into the space within the peritoneum. The word is primarily encountered in Finnish clinical descriptions and may be translated into English as “into the peritoneum.” The concept is linked to procedures or treatments that involve the peritoneal space.

The peritoneum is a thin serous membrane comprising a parietal layer lining the abdominal wall and a visceral layer covering most abdominal organs. The peritoneal cavity contains a small amount of lubricating fluid and serves roles in fluid and solute exchange, immune defense, and organ movement within the abdomen.

Clinically, the peritoneal cavity is the site of peritoneal dialysis, a kidney replacement strategy in which dialysis fluid is infused into and drained from the cavity through a catheter. This enables diffusion of waste products and excess fluid across the peritoneal membrane. Intraperitoneal administration of medications, including chemotherapy or antibiotics, is used in selected conditions to achieve high local concentrations with reduced systemic exposure.

Peritonitis, inflammation of the peritoneum, is a serious condition that can result from infection, perforation, or leakage of dialysis fluid. It requires prompt evaluation and treatment, often with antibiotics and careful catheter management. Long-term use of peritoneal dialysis can lead to complications such as changes in peritoneal membrane transport properties or encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis, though these are relatively uncommon with proper care.
