Pericardoperatie refers to surgical procedures involving the pericardium, the sac that surrounds the heart. These operations are performed to address various conditions affecting this protective membrane. Common reasons for pericardial surgery include the buildup of fluid within the pericardium, known as pericardial effusion, which can compress the heart and impair its function. In such cases, a pericardiectomy or pericardiocentesis might be performed to drain the excess fluid.

Another indication for pericardial surgery is constrictive pericarditis, a condition where the pericardium becomes thickened and stiff, restricting the heart's ability to fill with blood. A pericardiectomy, the surgical removal of part or all of the pericardium, is the primary treatment for this condition, aiming to release the heart from the constricting sac. Infections of the pericardium, known as purulent pericarditis, may also necessitate surgical intervention to drain infected fluid and remove inflamed tissue.
