Perhemallin is a term used to describe a family structure. It originates from the Finnish word "perhe" meaning family and "malli" meaning model or pattern. Essentially, perhemallin refers to the various ways families can be organized and function. These structures are not static and have evolved significantly over time and across cultures.

Traditional perhemallin often centered on a nuclear family unit, typically consisting of a mother, father, and their biological children. However, contemporary society recognizes a much broader spectrum of perhemallin. This includes single-parent families, where one parent raises children alone. Blended families, also known as stepfamilies, are another common perhemallin, formed when parents with children from previous relationships come together.

Same-sex parent families, where children are raised by two parents of the same sex, are increasingly recognized and accepted as a valid perhemallin. Extended families, which involve grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins living together or in close proximity and playing an active role in child-rearing, also represent a distinct perhemallin. Furthermore, some families may include adoptive parents and their children, or foster families where children are temporarily or permanently placed with caregivers. The concept of perhemallin emphasizes that family is defined by relationships, love, and mutual support, rather than a rigid, predefined structure.
