Penetranteilla is the Finnish term for penetrants, liquids used in liquid penetrant testing (PT), a non-destructive testing method used to reveal surface-breaking flaws in non-porous materials such as metals, plastics and ceramics. Penetrants are applied to a clean surface, allowed to dwell so that the liquid enters any openings, excess is removed, and a developer is applied to draw the penetrant out of flaws, creating a visible indication under appropriate lighting.
