There is no canonical real-world species or formal taxonomic consensus for patalyns; descriptions vary by author and medium. In many renderings, patalyns are found in dim, forested habitats and exhibit a distinctive glow that is strongest at dusk and night.

Morphology and appearance are diverse across depictions, but patalyns are commonly portrayed as herbaceous or small woody plants with slender stems and simple leaves, bearing flowers that emit light or change color in response to environmental cues. The bioluminescence often serves ecological roles such as attracting pollinators or deterring herbivores, and may also create atmospheric effects in fictional landscapes.

Ecology and life cycle are likewise variable. Patalyns are usually depicted as perennial plants with reproductive strategies emphasizing seed dispersal by wind or animals active after sunset.
