Composition typically includes ordained ministers or pastors as well as lay volunteers such as elders, deacons, or trained lay ministers. Roles may include a team leader, care coordinators, hospital and home visit teams, and volunteers who provide listening ears, prayer, and practical support. The team works closely with church staff and, when appropriate, external professionals.

Activities include regular visits to the sick or elderly, bereavement support, funeral or memorial arrangements, spiritual counsel, prayer meetings, and crisis response. They may organize meal trains, transportation, or other forms of practical help, and they often keep a confidential care registry to track needs and follow-up.

Governance and procedures: The pastoraatteam usually reports to church leadership or a care committee. It develops care policies, maintains contacts, ensures confidentiality and ethical guidelines, and coordinates with other church ministries during major life events.

Variations exist between denominations and local churches. In some contexts the term pastoraat is used to describe a geographic or pastoral zone managed by a team; in others it refers more generally to a network of care provided by volunteers and clergy.
