Partio is a Finnish term with several related meanings tied to group movement and activity. In everyday Finnish, it denotes a patrol—an organized group that moves through an area to monitor, secure, or perform tasks. The word is also used for the act of patrolling generally, including security and law enforcement.

In the Scouting context, partio is the basic unit within a lippukunta, or Scout troop. A partio typically consists of five to eight scouts and is led by a partiojohtaja or patrol leader. The term reflects the emphasis on teamwork, outdoor skills, and service that characterizes Scouting. Local Scout groups in Finland are organized as partiolippukunnat (Scout Troops), and individual members are called partios, or more commonly partiolaiset.

Finland has a long-standing Scouting tradition. Suomen Partiolaiset – Finlands Scouting is the national association that represents Finnish Scouts and is a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. The organization coordinates programs, training, and activities for partios across the country.

Beyond Scouting, partio also appears in police and military contexts to describe a patrol—an assigned group that conducts surveillance, deterrence, and response in a given area.
