Particionálódás, often translated as partitioning or fragmentation, refers to the process where a larger entity is divided into smaller, distinct parts. This concept appears in various fields, including computer science, mathematics, and social sciences, with different specific meanings.

In computer science, partitioning commonly refers to dividing a hard drive or other storage device into multiple sections, called partitions. Each partition can be treated as a separate drive, allowing for organization of data, installation of multiple operating systems, or improved performance. Fragmentation, in contrast, occurs when files are broken into pieces and scattered across different physical locations on a storage device. This can slow down access times as the drive head needs to move to multiple locations to retrieve a single file. Defragmentation is the process of reorganizing these scattered file pieces into contiguous blocks.

Mathematically, partition refers to the ways a set or a number can be broken down into subsets or summands. For example, the partitions of the number 4 are 4, 3+1, 2+2, 2+1+1, and 1+1+1+1.

In social sciences, particularly in sociology and political science, partition can describe the division of a territory or population into separate entities, often along ethnic, religious, or political lines. This can be a formal process, such as the partition of India in 1947, or an informal societal division. The term highlights the creation of distinct, often mutually exclusive, groups or areas from a previously unified whole.
