Paresthetic is a term used to describe an abnormal sensation, typically a prickling or tingling feeling, experienced in the skin. It is often referred to as "pins and needles." This sensation is usually temporary and can be caused by a variety of factors, most commonly by pressure on a nerve. For instance, when a limb "falls asleep" due to being in an awkward position, the reduced blood flow and direct pressure on nerves can lead to paresthetic sensations.

Other causes of paresthetic sensations include nerve compression, such as in carpal tunnel syndrome, where the median nerve in the wrist is squeezed. Certain medical conditions can also manifest with paresthesia. These include diabetes, which can lead to diabetic neuropathy affecting the peripheral nerves, multiple sclerosis (MS), where damage to the myelin sheath disrupts nerve signals, and vitamin deficiencies, particularly of B vitamins. Migraines, anxiety, and even hyperventilation can also trigger temporary paresthetic episodes.

While often harmless and resolving on its own, persistent or severe paresthesia can indicate a more serious underlying medical issue. It is important to consult a healthcare professional if paresthetic sensations are frequent, prolonged, or accompanied by other symptoms such as weakness, numbness, or changes in coordination. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, a review of medical history, and potentially nerve conduction studies or imaging tests to identify the cause. Treatment depends on the underlying condition and may involve lifestyle changes, medication, or physical therapy.
