Parametrons are digital logic elements that implement computation through parametric oscillation. The device relies on a nonlinear resonant circuit driven at approximately twice its natural frequency. In such a system, the oscillation stabilizes in one of two phase states, typically separated by 180 degrees, which encode binary information. Information is carried by the phase of the oscillation rather than its amplitude, allowing a form of phase-encoded logic.

Construction and operation are based on coupling multiple parametrons. A single parametron provides a stable phase, while interactions between units enable logic functions. Logic gates, such as AND, OR, and NOT, are realized by configuring the coupling and biasing of adjacent parametrons so that the phase relationship determines the output. The state of a parametron can be set or switched by applying a small perturbation or an injection signal, often coordinated by a clock or data stream.

Historical context and significance are tied to mid-20th-century computing in Japan. Parametrons were developed in the 1950s as a competing approach to digital logic before transistor-based circuits became dominant. They were used in some early Japanese computers during the 1950s and 1960s, offering a pathway to high-speed switching with relatively simple resonant components. However, the technology was eventually eclipsed by transistorized and later integrated-circuit logic, which offered easier scaling and manufacturing.

Legacy and influence remain in the study of nonlinear dynamics and resonant computing. Parametrons illustrate how parametric resonance can be harnessed for information processing, and they are frequently cited in histories of alternative computing paradigms.
