Pappersmassans, often translated as "pulp and paper industry" or "wood pulp industry," refers to the sector involved in the production of pulp from wood or other fibrous materials, and its subsequent processing into paper and paperboard products. This industry is a significant global enterprise, transforming raw materials into a vast array of everyday items.

The process begins with the harvesting of timber, typically from sustainably managed forests. This wood is then transported to mills where it undergoes pulping. There are two primary methods of pulping: mechanical and chemical. Mechanical pulping grinds wood into fibers, yielding a higher volume but a weaker pulp, often used for newsprint. Chemical pulping, such as the Kraft process, uses chemicals to dissolve lignin, the substance binding wood fibers, resulting in a stronger, purer pulp suitable for a wider range of paper products.

Once pulp is produced, it is mixed with water and other additives like fillers and dyes. This slurry is then spread onto screens and pressed to remove water, forming a continuous sheet. This sheet is then dried and calendered to achieve the desired smoothness and thickness. The final product can be anything from tissue paper and printing paper to packaging materials and cardboard.

The pulp and paper industry plays a crucial role in economies worldwide, providing employment and contributing to trade.
