Papering refers to the process of covering walls or ceilings with decorative paper, commonly known as wallpaper. This practice has a long history, dating back to ancient China where paper was initially used as a decorative wall covering. Over centuries, the technique evolved, and papering as we know it today became more widespread in Europe.

The application of wallpaper involves several steps. First, the surface to be covered must be properly prepared, which typically includes cleaning, repairing any imperfections, and applying a primer or sizing to ensure good adhesion. The wallpaper itself is usually cut into strips of appropriate length. Paste is then applied either to the back of the wallpaper or directly to the wall, depending on the type of paper and paste. The strips are carefully hung, with each strip butted up against the previous one, and smoothed out to remove air bubbles and ensure a flush finish. Trimming excess paper at the edges and around obstacles is the final step.

Wallpaper can be made from various materials, including paper, vinyl, fabric, and even natural fibers like grasscloth. The design and pattern options are vast, ranging from simple solids and subtle textures to intricate murals and bold geometric prints. Papering is a popular method for interior decoration, offering a way to add color, pattern, and personality to a room.
