However, the bent wire clip as we know it today is often attributed to Johan Vaaler, a Norwegian inventor who patented a design in 1899, though his version was reportedly less practical than others. Despite this, the "clip" became a symbol of Norwegian resistance during World War II, worn as a sign of unity and solidarity against the Nazi occupation, as it was seen as a symbol of sticking together.
