Paneled refers to something that is covered, divided, or finished with panels—flat sections that are typically rectangular or square. A panel is a flat piece that is set into a frame or attached to a surface, often for decorative or structural purposes.

Paneled surfaces occur in architecture, furniture, and cabinetry. Common forms include paneled doors and paneled walls, where panels are framed by rails and stiles. In furniture, frame-and-panel construction uses a movable panel within a fixed frame to accommodate wood expansion.

There are raised panels and flat panels. Raised panels have a raised central section, framed by a profile; flat panels are flush with the surrounding frame. Materials include wood, MDF, plywood, and metal, with designs ranging from traditional carved profiles to simple modern flat panels.

Etymology and history: The term derives from the French panneau and Latin pannus; paneled construction is a longstanding technique in many regions, popular in classical and traditional interiors. In modern manufacturing, paneling is also used in doors, wall coverings, and portable or modular furniture, often achieved with pre-cut panel pieces.
