Palmiõlide, also known as palm oil, is a vegetable oil derived from the fruit of oil palm trees. These trees, scientifically known as Elaeis guineensis, are native to tropical regions of Africa but are now cultivated extensively in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia, which are the world's leading producers. The oil is extracted from both the mesocarp (fleshy part) of the fruit, yielding reddish crude palm oil, and from the kernel, producing a clearer oil.

Palm oil is a versatile ingredient with a wide range of applications. It is commonly used in the food industry as a cooking oil and as an ingredient in processed foods such as baked goods, confectionery, and snacks due to its texture and stability. Beyond food, it is a significant component in the production of soaps, detergents, cosmetics, and biofuels. Its high yield per hectare compared to other vegetable oils contributes to its widespread use and economic importance.

However, the rapid expansion of palm oil cultivation has been linked to significant environmental concerns. Deforestation, habitat loss for endangered species like orangutans, and greenhouse gas emissions are frequently cited issues. In response, initiatives like the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) have emerged, aiming to promote the production and use of sustainable palm oil through certification schemes. Despite these efforts, the debate surrounding the environmental and social impacts of palm oil production continues.
