Paleoklimatoloogias, often translated as paleoclimatology, is the scientific study of past climates. It reconstructs historical climate conditions and their changes over time, ranging from thousands to millions of years ago. This field utilizes various indirect sources of evidence, known as proxies, to infer past environmental conditions.

Key proxies include ice cores, which trap air bubbles and preserve layers of snow and dust that reveal atmospheric composition and temperature over long periods. Sedimentary rocks and ocean floor sediments contain fossils, pollen, and isotopic signatures that provide clues about past temperatures, sea levels, and vegetation. Tree rings, or dendrochronology, offer high-resolution records of annual climate variations, particularly temperature and precipitation, in recent millennia. Coral skeletons also record ocean temperatures and salinity.

Paleoclimatologists analyze these proxies to understand natural climate variability, the causes of past climate shifts, and the Earth's climate system's sensitivity to various factors like greenhouse gas concentrations, solar activity, and volcanic eruptions. This knowledge is crucial for improving our understanding of current climate change and for making more accurate predictions about future climate scenarios.
