Paistetaivas is a Finnish term that translates literally to "fried sky." It describes a specific atmospheric phenomenon where clouds, particularly at sunset or sunrise, take on vibrant, often reddish or orange hues, resembling a brightly cooked surface. This visual effect is most commonly observed when the sun is low on the horizon.

The colors are caused by the scattering of sunlight by atmospheric particles. When the sun is at a low angle, its light travels through a greater thickness of the Earth's atmosphere. Shorter wavelengths of light, such as blue and green, are scattered away more effectively by air molecules and aerosols. Longer wavelengths, like red, orange, and yellow, are less scattered and are therefore more likely to reach the observer's eye.

The presence of dust, smoke, or water droplets in the atmosphere can further enhance these colors by scattering light more intensely. This is why paistetaivas can be particularly vivid after volcanic eruptions or in areas with significant air pollution or during times of high humidity. The term is largely poetic, reflecting the striking visual appearance rather than a scientific classification of a weather event.
