Paikkatason is a Finnish term used in geographic information systems (GIS), statistics, and planning to refer to a spatial level or granularity defined by geographic location. It designates the unit of analysis at which data are collected, stored, and analyzed. The paikkatason is chosen according to the purpose of the study and can range from broad aggregates to fine-grained units, such as national, regional, municipal, or grid-cell levels.

In practice, analyses can be conducted at different paikkataso levels, and data can be aggregated or disaggregated between levels. A finer paikkatason provides more spatial detail but requires more data and may raise privacy concerns; a coarser paikkatason improves statistical stability and confidentiality. The concept is commonly used in public statistics, urban planning, environmental monitoring, and market research, often in combination with a temporal dimension to form spatiotemporal analyses.

The term derives from paikka meaning place and taso meaning level. It is closely related to other Finnish terms such as paikkatieto (geospatial data) and karttataso (map layer), which describe different aspects of how location data are represented and analyzed. In Finland and in Nordic GIS literature, paikkatason is a convenient shorthand for discussing the spatial dimension of datasets, dashboards, or models.
