Paikallispuudutus, known in English as local anesthesia, is a method used to temporarily block nerve signals in a specific area of the body, preventing pain sensation. This is achieved by injecting a local anesthetic drug near the nerves that supply sensation to the target region. The anesthetic agent works by blocking the voltage-gated sodium channels in the nerve cell membranes, which are crucial for transmitting pain impulses.

Local anesthesia is widely employed in various medical and dental procedures. In dentistry, it is routinely used for fillings, extractions, root canals, and other treatments to ensure patient comfort. In surgery, it is utilized for minor procedures such as mole removal, biopsies, and the repair of certain injuries, allowing the patient to remain conscious throughout the operation. It can also be used to numb a larger area, such as during epidural or spinal anesthesia, which are forms of regional anesthesia but fall under the broader umbrella of localized nerve blockade.

The onset and duration of local anesthesia vary depending on the specific drug used, the concentration, the volume injected, and the site of administration. Common side effects are generally mild and transient, such as temporary numbness, tingling, or swelling at the injection site. More serious adverse reactions are rare but can include allergic reactions, nerve damage, or systemic toxicity if the anesthetic is absorbed into the bloodstream too quickly or in excessive amounts. The reversibility of the nerve blockade is a key characteristic, as sensation returns to the area once the anesthetic agent has been metabolized and cleared from the body.
