Packingen is a term found in several Germanic-language technical vocabularies and is used to denote concepts related to enclosure, sealing, and containment. The precise meaning depends on language and field, but it generally relates to packages, packing materials, or sealing elements used to prevent leaks or losses.

In packaging and commerce, the German word Packung means a package or packet, with the plural Packungen describing multiple packages. In Dutch technical usage, the word packing or pakking refers to a gasket or sealing material used to close joints. In these contexts, packings and related materials are selected for factors such as fit, chemical compatibility, and durability.

In mechanical and process engineering, packing (in English) denotes sealing material placed in stuffing boxes, valves, or pumps to prevent leakage. Common packing materials include braided fibers, PTFE, and graphite compounds, chosen for temperature and chemical resistance. In process industries, packing also describes the material filling a column or reactor to enhance contact between phases; such packing can be random (massively filled without a defined structure) or structured (engineered to improve efficiency).
